CYBER ATTACK WITHIN THE WATER SECTOR
Some of you may be aware of the press release from South Staffs Water at https://www.south-staffs-water.co.uk/news/important-statement.
Specific details of the attack are not yet known, but the organisation is being supported effectively while they work through the disruption to their services.
We understand that the initial attempt was to encrypt data within their network, with a view to exploiting this to get the company to make a payment to decrypt the information (called ‘Ransomware’).
Although the hackers failed to encrypt the data, they are offering to sell the details of how they managed to breach South Staffs Water’s networks.
